Devotional - Day 36

Transcript (By MS Word)

00:00:05

Good morning Grace family. This is pastor Jason coming to do it day 36 of our Lent devotional series. Thank you so much for joining us in this time. It's been great preparing these messages for you and.

00:00:19

Uh, we appreciate your kind feedback on.

00:00:23

Just to remind you of where we've been this season of Lent, we've been focusing on self reflection and repentance, and yesterday Pastor Ryan went over John Chapter 12.

00:00:36

That's the famous passage where Mary comes to Jesus and anointed his feet oil and watch them with her.

00:00:42

Here today we're going to be looking at another famous passage, Isaiah 53. And arguably, this is one of the most famous passages from the Old Testament about the resurrection.

00:00:56

Ann

00:00:57

Particularly about the identity of the Messiah.

00:01:03

And so we're gonna dive right in?

00:01:06

I'll read the text as I read it.

00:01:08

Go ahead, close your eyes if you're in a in a place that you can do that and.

00:01:16

Pay attention to what the Lord is drawing your eyes too.

00:01:21

As we read it.

00:01:23

Alright, I'll add 53.

00:01:27

Who is believed what he has heard from us and to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed, for he grew up before him like a young plant.

00:01:36

And like a root out of dry ground, he had no form or Majesty that we should look at him and know beauty that we should desire him.

00:01:44

He was despised and rejected by men, a man of sorrows and acquainted with grief, and as one from whom men hide their faces.

00:01:54

He was despised, and we esteemed him not.

00:01:58

Surely he has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows.

00:02:02

Yet we esteemed him stricken, smitten by God and afflicted.

00:02:07

But he was pierced for our transgressions.

00:02:11

He was crushed for our iniquities, and upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace.

00:02:18

And with his wounds, we are healed.

00:02:21

All we like, sheep have gone astray.

00:02:24

We have turned everyone to his own way and the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all.

00:02:31

He was oppressed and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth.

00:02:36

Like a lamb that is led to slaughter and like a sheep that is before its shearers is silent, so he opened not his mouth.

00:02:45

By oppression and judgment, he was taken away.

00:02:48

And As for his generation, who considered that he was cut out of the land of the living, stricken from the transgression of my people.

00:02:57

They made his grave with the wicked and with a rich man in his death.

00:03:02

Although he had done no violence and there was no deceit in his mouth.

00:03:07

Yet it was the will of the Lord to crush him.

00:03:10

He has put him to grief.

00:03:13

When his soul makes an offering for guilt, he shall see his offspring.

00:03:18

He shall prolong his days, the will of the Lord shall prosper his hand.

00:03:23

Out of the anguish of his soul, he shall see and be satisfied by his knowledge shall the righteous one, my servant, make many to be accounted righteous.

00:03:35

And he shall bear their iniquities.

00:03:37

Therefore I will divide with him as a portion with the many.

00:03:44

And he shall divide the spoil with the strong, because he poured out his soul to death, and was numbered with the transgression.

00:03:53

Yet he bore the sins of many.

00:03:56

And makes intercession for the transgressors.

00:04:01

As far as the reading of God's word, all men are like grass and all their glories or like Flowers, field grass, Withers, and the Flowers all.

00:04:09

Oh

00:04:10

But now I gotta let it stands forever.

00:04:14

So let's turn our attention to you.

00:04:17

So real quick.

00:04:19

What did you notice in that passage?

00:04:20

Go ahead and pause the video and just jot down a few thoughts that you had and really use them to help guide your prayers after the devotion and return to the Lord.

00:04:35

More private time of worship and prayer.

00:04:38

So this is a famous passage.

00:04:42

It's a prophecy of the coming Messiah, and in particular it's a prophecy that points to the fact that the Messiah is going to be raised up by God specifically.

00:04:57

To die for our sins. That this is the solution for the sinfulness of God's people. This is what is going to be used to reunite God with his people.

00:05:14

And we see Jesus here.

00:05:17

An and were told again and again throughout this passage that he was pierced for our transgressions.

00:05:26

Five times that I counted it in verse five, he was pierced for our transgressions, crushed for our iniquities.

00:05:37

Verse 6.

00:05:40

The Lord laid on him the iniquity of us all.

00:05:43

Verse 10.

00:05:45

Yeah.

00:05:47

His soul makes an offering for guilt.

00:05:51

Verse 11.

00:05:53

Ann

00:05:56

How does?

00:05:58

The anguish of his soul he shall see and be satisfied by the knowledge.

00:06:03

By his knowledge shall the righteous one, my servant, making many to be accounted righteous, and he will bear their iniquities.

00:06:09

And he was numbered with the transgressors.

00:06:12

1st.

00:06:13

And he makes intercession for the transgressors, yes, as if God wants to hammer down again and again and again that Jesus is the sacrifice for our sins.

00:06:27

It is through his sacrifice that we're relieved of all of our guilt that all of our sins are put upon him.

00:06:38

And that we, by his conduct, are made righteous and clean.

00:06:44

It's a wonderful picture of that.

00:06:46

Great exchange.

00:06:49

Our sin for his righteousness.

00:06:53

And that's a wonderful thing to meditate on, particularly as we go into Holy Week.

00:07:00

We're approaching Good Friday and on Good Friday, that that is the day of atonement.

00:07:08

That's that's the day when you know in history that one day.

00:07:13

That all of the standard.

00:07:15

The entire world that all of it is put upon Jesus.

00:07:21

All of it is atoned for.

00:07:25

Uhm?

00:07:28

And he does this specifically to make us righteous and clean.

00:07:36

Another thing that I noticed if we go back up to verse 4.

00:07:42

As surely he has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows.

00:07:48

Ann

00:07:49

It's a simple statement, but.

00:07:51

It just reinforces to us that Jesus knows what it is to be human, he knows.

00:07:59

Our griefs and sorrows.

00:08:01

He doesn't just know of them.

00:08:04

That's a different thing.

00:08:06

He does know up.

00:08:09

But he knows that.

00:08:11

Because he is born.

00:08:13

It's as if our union with him is so close, so tight that the Holy Spirit has hired us to Jesus so well.

00:08:24

That our griefs or histories our sorrows, are his arms.

00:08:29

He knows them because he feels like he knows your grease.

00:08:33

He knows he or silence.

00:08:38

And there's comforting.

00:08:40

You know the God of the universe is not.

00:08:45

He's not leaving you alone.

00:08:49

To experience the trials of this life by yourself.

00:08:53

No, instead.

00:08:56

He has united with you so closely.

00:09:01

That your trial is history.

00:09:05

Your grief is history, your sorrows, his arms.

00:09:09

And your joy is history.

00:09:12

Ann

00:09:14

That's an amazing thing to meditate on, and I would encourage you as you go into a private time prayer.

00:09:23

To thank him and.

00:09:26

Let that seep into your soul.

00:09:29

That

00:09:31

Jesus loves you so much.

00:09:35

Everything that troubles you troubles.

00:09:40

Let's go ahead and read the passage again, and then I'll give you a little bit of encouragement for prayer.

00:09:49

Ann

00:09:51

Isaiah 53

00:09:53

Who is believed what he has heard from us and to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?

00:10:00

Where he grew up before him like a young plant and like a root out of dry ground.

00:10:06

He had no form or Majesty that we should look at him and know beauty that we should desire him.

00:10:12

He was despised and rejected by men, a man of sorrows and acquainted with grief.

00:10:19

And as one from whom men hide their faces, he was despised.

00:10:23

And we esteemed him not.

00:10:25

Surely he has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows.

00:10:29

Yet we esteemed him stricken, smitten by God and afflicted.

00:10:34

But he was pierced for our transgressions.

00:10:37

He was crushed for our iniquities.

00:10:39

Upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and with his wounds we are healed.

00:10:47

All we like, sheep have gone astray.

00:10:50

We have turned everyone to his own way and the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all.

00:10:59

He was oppressed and he was afflicted.

00:11:02

Yet he opened not his mouth.

00:11:05

Like a lamb that is led to the slaughter and like a sheep that is before its shearers is silent, so he opened not his mouth.

00:11:14

By oppression and judgment, he was taken away.

00:11:18

And As for his generation, who considered that he was cut out of the land of the living, stricken for the transgressions of my people.

00:11:26

They made his grave with the wicked.

00:11:29

And with a rich man in his death, although he had done no violence, and there was no deceit in his mouth.

00:11:36

Yeah it was the will of the Lord to crush him.

00:11:39

And he has put him to grief when he makes his soul an offering for guilt, he shall see his offspring.

00:11:46

He shall prolong his days, the will of the Lord shall prosper his hand out of the anguish of his soul.

00:11:54

He shall see and be satisfied.

00:11:57

By his knowledge, shall the righteous one, my servant, make many to be accounted righteous, and he shall bear their iniquities.

00:12:06

Therefore I will divide him a portion with the many, and he shall divide the spoils with the strong, because he poured out his soul to death.

00:12:17

And was numbered with the transgressors.

00:12:20

Yet he bore the sin of many, and makes intercession for the transgressors.

00:12:28

Now as you turn to the Lord in prayer today.

00:12:33

You know, I would encourage you to.

00:12:37

To approach this a little differently.

00:12:41

Then then we have other devotions.

00:12:46

Now.

00:12:47

There's a wonderful image in Pilgrim's progress.

00:12:52

Next Christian, the main character of the story.

00:12:57

He finds the Bible, he starts reading it, and a burden is placed on his back and urgent just gets heavier and heavier and heavier as he goes through his trials.

00:13:12

And.

00:13:14

That burden is his sin and his shame.

00:13:19

For that it's his guilt.

00:13:22

And he doesn't know what to do about it.

00:13:24

And there is one pivotal point in the story when that burden is cut off of his back by Jesus.

00:13:32

And I would, I would encourage you.

00:13:36

Today

00:13:37

To think of a particular sin, a particular scent you.

00:13:41

Struggle with the weighs heavily upon.

00:13:46

That you just can't seem to shake.

00:13:52

And I ask you to just close your eyes and picture.

00:13:55

That's in that black ball strapped to your back, just like it was to Christians and pilgrims.

00:13:57

That's.

00:13:57

00:14:01

Progress and see that.

00:14:05

Send

00:14:06

Being lifted off of you and put upon Jesus.

00:14:15

That

00:14:17

It's an amazing thing.

00:14:20

Jesus himself.

00:14:23

God of the universe came.

00:14:27

Because he loves you.

00:14:30

And instead of condemning you for your sin.

00:14:35

He took pity on me.

00:14:38

And he took it off of me and put it onto his own.

00:14:44

Picture.

00:14:47

You

00:14:48

Hamran moving away from.

00:14:51

And hear his pronouncement that you are now clean.

00:14:56

You are righteous that you stand before God.

00:15:01

With a spotless record.

00:15:04

The spotless record with Jesus.

00:15:08

And then thank God.

00:15:10

That he's done all of that for you.

00:15:15

Thanks for joining us for Day 36. You just got here tomorrow for day 37.
